Get $50 for almost zero effort. Seriously.

In an effort to promote my blog, I am giving away four $50 MasterCard gift certificates. All you have to do is respond to one of my posts. Once I have received a total of 50 posts, all from different people (and not from autobots), I will randomly select 4 of those people to send the gift cards to. That puts your odds of winning at 8%. Your odds of winning $50 on a $5 scratch off lottery ticket? .31%. I am doing this because my blog is the best ever. So post something awe inspiring.

More reasons why Sacramento sucks

I was recently informed that Sacramento has a very serious black widow infestation? WTF? If you asked me what I thought Hell was like, I'm sure somewhere on my list of things you'd have to deal with, would a black widow infestation. I was told that if you spend any amount of time outside, you'll most likely get bitten by a black widow spider. Dear God! Now, black widow bites are rarely fatal, and being 6'4" 250lbs, I probably wouldn't die, but the pain and swelling is said to be excruciating. Sometimes I think ignorance is bliss. The more I learn about Sacramento, the more I want to buy a hazmat suite and only drive between work and home. Good lord...But no one can say that Sacramento hasn't earned some respectable national rankings. Notable Sacramento rankings include: An American Lung Association report from 2011 entitled "Most Polluted Cities: State of the Air 2011" Ranked Sacramento 5th worst for ozone and 9th worst for short term particles. CNBC ranked Sacramento 8th most stressful city in America. BusinessWeek ranked Sac as the 12th unhappiest city in the America. Business insider ranked Sac as being the 4th most suicidal city in the US. Forbes ranked Sacramento as the 5th worst city to live in the US. The CQ press released a new national study that ranks Sacramento as the nation's 58th most dangerous city (that's out of every city in America). Anyways, you get my point. Ballsac sucks. Every time I ask someone what there is to do here, I get the same answers: Well Napa is like an hour away. Everyone always points to me to somewhere else that is close by. Perhaps my interpretation of Sacramento is being formed by only seeking out negative information. If anyone reading this can explain to me why Sacramento is awesome, please post your comments. To be honest, all this research revealing that Sacramento might just be the anus of America is depressing. I would love someone to reveal to me all the positive and wonderful things this city has to offer.

  1. I'm from Sacramento and I loved growing up there. I lived in Orangevale, which is a part of Sacramento County. I'm surprised at how negative and almost angry you seem... Why are you wasting time bashing Sacramento?? I don't get it. Anyway I loved it. Plenty to do. Hiking, swimming, great running trails, great weather, great people. Spent a lot of time outside. Black widows were never a huge issue....? Don't know where you got that from. The American River is absolutely beautiful and Lake Natomas was one of my favorite places to be. There is good food, shopping and entertainment as well. I always look forward to going back home to visit because I just really miss it and LOVE Sacramento! -Vivian-

  2. Sacramento sucks.
To say there is good food, or shopping tells me you don't know what good food or shopping is. Orangevale is an ugly, ugly town. The streets are a disaster.
Sacramento sucks because everything is cheap in terms of quality. No one is brilliant here. No industry leaders or experts live here. The size and lift of your truck seems to be a status symbol. Lots of meat heads and people who like zebra print too. That's just not civilized.
The most revered point of reference is the capital, where Arnold flew in an out of everyday from his Brentwood estate in LA because no one with wealth, success, and class would ever want to live here.

  4. I like Sacramento. I am a Bay Area xplant. Went to college in Austin, TX and grad school in Houston, TX. When I came back home to the Bay Area, I realized how ridiculously difficult it is to live comfortably there. I was working for the state at the time. I moved to Sacramento because it made sense since I work for the state. I will say that I do not miss the Bay Area one bit. I have a house on a huge lot here in Sac (my mortgage is less than my rent was in the Bay Area), traffic is nothing compared to the Bay. I would take Sac RT over BART any day. People here will say "hello," "excuse me," and "thank you" versus shoving you and then looking at you like YOU are the rude one as people do on BART. (Many people forego their happiness to be able to say, "I live in the San Francisco Bay Area" - these are typically people who are not from the Bay and the same people who bash places like Sac because it validates their struggling to survive in the Bay.) I love driving like 30 minutes to hiking that rivals the coast. I love the pool and BBQ parties in the summer. Plenty of delicious food to be eaten here. The economy is much more stable in the Sac Valley due to the high level of government jobs. There is breathing room here...what I mean by that is you can go places here, out in public, and not be shoulder-to-shoulder with 100 other people doing the same thing. There are sucky things about Sac like the underperforming County Board of Supervisors and crime in certain areas is pretty bad too (just stay away from the gangsta ghetto places and you will be fine). I find that life here is slower than most places, less congested, and it's just easier to live because of the lower cost of living... people are less stressed out, less road rage. If you are looking for some flashy place to live because you have no identity and therefore must use a geographic location as your identity, then Sac is not for you. Sac is not flashy, it is more conservative than many places. Downtown and midtown are much less so. But what many people who have chosen to settle in Sac like about Sac is people bad-mouthing Sac - it keeps the population under control. Also, black widows are common in dry parts of California. Just don't go sticking your hands in dark, creepy corners in a wood shed and you will be fine. I think as one ages, places like Sac become more and more desirable. I can't wait to sell my house and move to a homogeneous suburb like Rocklin or Folsom or Eldorado Hills - virtually no crime and people actually take care of their stuff. But then, I am an educated, near middle aged, government-employed white male. When I was a kid, I wanted to live in San Francisco. Now I hate going to the city - it reeks of piss, I don't dare drive there, and there are soooooo many people everywhere, like parasites... all trying to one-up each other. I will take Sacramento over the Bay Area, Austin, and Houston. Everything you need is here: food, entertainment, nature, affordability, and if you want to travel there are so many more things to do so close by.

  5. The area has a lot of very trashy people, there is no doubt about that and that is why the region keeps sprawling out as people with more money constantly try to move further out from the core. It makes for a very boring place. It's not as dangerous as people may think, just trashy and boring. The natural setting is not great as it has a rather poor climate for being in California (very hot summers, colder winters compared to the coast and is always extremely dry). I still live here but have started traveling a lot more, I realized I can't stay sane living in a place like this and never going other places. Whether I remain here is still yet to be seen, the main thing that is good about it is that its cheap compared to other parts of California. That may actually be the only good thing about it other than maybe the river, although that scene gets pretty trashy in the summer with all the fat drunkards acting like children.

  6. Sacramento does suck. It is a city without culture and an identity. We have the NBA's worst basketball team. Decent players that end up here, with the exception of the Chris Webber era, intentionally play bad basketball hoping to get traded away. King's management, regardless of the ownership group, is the laughing stock of the league when it comes to drafting talent.

It started with Joe Klein getting drafted ahead of Karl Malone. It continued with the latest round of trades and draft picks in recent years. Jimmer Freddette was drafted ahead of Klay Thompson. Ben Mclemore, a bust. Thomas Robinson, another bust. They got real lucky with Isaiah Thomas, and then let him get away for nothing instead of giving him a $30 million contract extension. Now he's an all star. Hassan Whiteside is another big they got for nothing, gave away for nothing and now he's one of the best big men in the NBA. Buddy Hield was the signature player in Demarcus Cousin trade, even though the best player in the trade was Tyreke Evans, who also walked for nothing, a second time. Now we're stuck with Caully-Stein, the biggest pussy in the league. I could go on but you get the point. It's consistent with every thing else that's wrong with this lame ass town

The signature University plays basketball in the smallest NCAA D1 facility in the country. There are high schools in this town with better facilities.

If you're middle aged and single, entertainment is extremely limited. The available women don't impress me either. Before any of you Xenophobes get a chance to retort, I do plan on moving. I'm only here because I'm a single parent taking care of my son until he graduates from high school this year. His sorry ass mother who is from here is the absent baby momma. I'm house hunting right now and hope to move the day after my son graduates.

I've been in and out of this town since 1986. Therefore I am perfectly qualified to criticize it. This was a great place to be until the mid 90s. That's when the military downsizing initiative started closing the bases. Once the three major installations that were here closed, away went a billion dollars a year in revenue to this city. What also left was a large scale workforce of people who made good money, knew how to have a good time and behave in public, and the city nightlife catered to that crowd.

Once that crowd left this town, people from all over the place started moving here, people who were from here started frequenting the places the military crowd use to go to, and they didn't know how to act. Before you knew it, this town went from a city with places to go seven nights a week to a ghost town full of people, who quite frankly were country bumpkin. That applies to all the ethnic groups here.

What you have now is extremely limited options, especially for people in my age group. There's not a single jazz club in this entire city. Women here act like they're God's gift, you're not. I've spent a small fortune getting the hell away from here every chance I get, just to get some quality entertainment. For those of you who love it here, in a few months there will be one less car stuck in traffic on this retarded freeway system. You can have this modern day version of Hooterville!

    1. Finally a truthful and accurate comment about yet another liberal cesspool city in California.
